Jaguars Franchise Tag Josh Allen, Paid $24 Million After 17.5 Sacks in 2023

Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive end Josh Allen will receive the franchise tag worth nearly $24.5 million. Allen totaled 17.5 sacks last season.

JACKSONVILLE, FL– Jaguars’ defensive end Josh Allen has received the franchise tag from the team after totaling 17.5 sacks last season. Allen was touted as one of the best pending free agents to hit the open market this year if he didn’t stay in Jacksonville, but it appears the Jags will not let that happen.

“We were not able to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Josh before today’s deadline, and thus, we have tagged him,” general manager Trent Baalke said in a team statement. “We certainly value Josh’s leadership on the field, in the locker room and in the community. Our objective to keep Josh in Jacksonville in the coming years remains unchanged and negotiations will continue.”

Allen has shown game-breaking ability in his past two years, amassing 24.5 sacks in 2022 and 2023. Josh Allen has become one of the league’s premier pass-rushers, and he’s due for a big payday sometime in the near future. The exclusive franchise tag guarantees the player a one-year salary of the five highest-paid players at his position during that current season, or 120% of his previous salary, whichever is higher; and it prevents him from negotiating a contract with any other team.

It sets Josh Allen to likely be in Jacksonville for one more year and for the Jaguars to continue to be in negotiations with him. It’s clear that the Jaguars may have started negotiations with Allen a little bit too late, as a deal seemed imminent as the two sides started to make serious progress.

The tag will probably net Allen around $24.5 million for the next year with salaries for next year still settling.

With Allen being tagged, it’s clear the Jaguars will have to make cuts elsewhere– look for Calvin Ridley’s future in Jacksonville to possibly come to a close as the team will have to cut down on heavy salaries and might not be able to afford Ridley to be resigned.
