Sam Huard has transferred to Cal Poly, taking a step down into FCS territory
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.– The FCS and Big Sky Conference just got a new contender to worry about. Sam Huard, who entered the transfer portal earlier this year has committed to Cal Poly.
Cal Poly is a FCS program located in San Luis Obispo, California. The Mustangs get Huard, probably with the enticement under new offensive coordinator Sheldon Cross, who coached Huard at Kennedy Catholic High School in Burien, Washington.
Huard was ranked as the 15th best quarterback in the 2021 class and committed to the University of Washington, where he fell victim to the transfer portal by way of ex-Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. In 2022, he only appeared in one game, a 52-6 win over Portland State.

Huard now steps down a level, while remaining a D1 quarterback, falls to the FCS where he’ll face the likes of Montana State, Sacramento State, and ironically enough– Portland State. Huard announced his decision to go to the Mustangs on KIRO radio in Seattle, during a show co-hosted by his uncle the former Washington and NFL quarterback Brock Huard.
The quarterback now looks to be somewhat of a revival for a program that has been disheartening to say the least. The Mustangs have went 7-29 over the past four seasons in a phase which the school newspaper described as “painful”.
The signing of Huard opened up the door for more talent to play for the Mustangs, as three more FBS transfers signed their letters of intent to play for Cal Poly, a drastic increase in recruits from what the team saw mere seasons ago.
While Huard may not have found the five-star destination he wanted, he still has landed quite the gig in California, and good play might give him more of a platform with the growth of the FCS in past years.
