The Denver Broncos are set to hire Sean Payton as their next head coach after a dumpster fire season, in a head coach trade deal that sends the Saints a pair of picks
After a tumultuous 2022 season that involved Nathaniel Hackett getting fired, a Russell Wilson regression, and a myriad of disappointment, the Denver Broncos have decided to turn over a new leaf with their head coach. The Broncos and New Orleans Saints have worked out a deal that sends Sean Payton and a Saints’ 2024 3rd-round pick to Denver in return for a 2023 first rounder and a 2024 second-round selection.
Payton has been a target by NFL teams for some time now since stepping down from the Saints coaching staff in 2021 following the retirement of de facto Hall of Famer quarterback Drew Brees. The hiring comes after a season of abysmal play from the Denver Broncos, the team who shelled out big money to hire Nathaniel Hackett as a head coach from the Green Bay Packers and to get All-Pro QB Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks, only to go 5-12, going against preseason expectations.

Payton has had an embellished career with the New Orleans Saints, winning Super Bowl Super Bowl XLIV and going 159-89 since his 2006 debut. He was also the main subject implicated in 2012’s Boutygate scandal, which accused Payton of paying out bonuses to Saints who would intentionally injure opposing players. Payton sat out the 2012 season and came back in 2013.
The Broncos look to turn around their program and make better success on a season that has been marred by misfortune.
