Seattle, WA– A year after Washington went 11-2 and 2nd in the Pac-12 with Michael Penix Jr., backup redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Huard has entered the transfer portal seeking a new home. Huard is one of a couple unsigned quarterbacks for the 2023 season and sets his eyes on somewhere with a more amicable environment apropos to his eligibility.
Huard has gotten limited play time during his two seasons with the Huskies, serving as an understudy during 2021 and 2022. Hailing from Bellevue, Washington, Huard committed to the hometown Huskies after being ranked as a 5-star recruit coming out of high school. The pass thrower was stuck behind scholarship QBs Penix Jr. and Dylan Morris during the 2022 season, only throwing two passes all year.
He did complete both passes for 24 yards however, an arbitrary and trivial stat compared to how highly touted Huard was out of high school.
“What do I want more? Do I want to go play right now, or do I want to continue to stick it out, because this has been my dream?” Huard said. “Do I really want to leave here like this, having really not played much? It was not how I expected to come in [to UW], but sometimes that’s life. Part of me just really wanted to stick it out and continue to grow and develop and then hopefully get my opportunity down the road. But I wanted a fresh start and a chance to compete to go play. That’s what ultimately led me to making this decision.”
Sam decided to commit to the Dawgs after both his father and his uncle– Damon and Brock Huard respectively played ball at the University of Washington. Huard also set multiple Washington state high school records including passing yards with 13,214 and passing touchdowns eclipsing the century mark at 153.
Huard will attempt to find a new place to play, with his impressive high school resume and the abundance of eligibility, there shouldn’t be anything holding him back from going to a team that needs a quarterback to finish off the roster.
